Hello, my name is Eugene Sommers!
I am the Economic Development Director for White Earth Nation. I grew up between the villages of Elbow Lake and Naytahwaush. After graduating from Waubun High School in 2012 I started work at the Shooting Star Casino while attending college. 2016 I transferred to the RTC and worked for Indian Child Welfare and Juvenile Healing to Wellness Court as a Case Manager. I also worked as a K-12 Teacher in many of our local schools.
I understand our community needs and the barriers our people face. During my summer layoff as a teacher I worked as a Rule 25 Assessor. This was an experience that taught me humility and the importance of harm reduction. As Indigenous people we carry historical trauma, how we deal with that trauma is important.
My public service history includes serving on Community Council, Community Advisory Boards, Coaching Boxing and Basketball, also serving as the Chairman of the White Earth Constitution Reform Delegation. I have studied the MCT Constitution, earned credentials in Tribal Administration & Governance and most recently became a Native Nation Rebuilder. Youth work is my passion and I am committed to investing in our youth to create future leaders.
