Nation Building

I Lead by the Five Core Principles of Nation Building

Practical Self-Rule: The Tribal Nation calls the shots.

Capable Governing Institutions: Back up governing responsibilities with competence.

Strategic Orientation: Decisions are made with long-term priorities in mind.

Leadership: Individuals who recognize the need for fundamental change and engage with the community to make that change happen.

Cultural Match: Institutions build and innovate upon indigenous conceptions of governing responsibilities.

“As an educator I made sure to include Tribal Government into curriculum. My students learn about our Constitution, IRA, ICWA, WELSA and the Compact Agreements with Mahnomen, Becker and Clearwater County. It is essential for our youth to understand our government to government relationships. We are often asked how these relationships can improve and as time passes there is incremental change at best. I believe our best course of action as a Nation is to get Tribal Members into seats as City Councilors and County Commissioners. When this happens I can guarantee government to government relations will improve.” - Eugene Sommers
